Spartanburg Community College Begins Using AI in the Nursing Classroom

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – Spartanburg Community College said it’s now the second college in the United States to use a special artificial intelligence-powered software in the nursing classroom. The first college was the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The software by London-based AIBODY is a computer program that simulates the human body in real time, allowing the user to see how different medical prognoses affect the entire body from the nervous system to the heart.

Mikota said the college is participating in a one year pilot program that will evaluate how students respond to the additional learning tool that will complement the current tools; like clinical experiences and robotic manikin patients.

“Does it help them? Does it improve their outcomes? And does it allow them to better think through the process of how to take care of real-life individuals in the world,” said Mikota, on the questions the college will seek to answer as it evaluates the program’s usefulness.

According to Mikota, Palmetto InnovaSphere, a 501(c) in Spartanburg, was instrumental in allowing the pilot program to happen.
